The Manhattan Beach Police Department put two local schools on lockdown January 18 as officers searched for burglary suspects in the area, ABC reported. Meadows Elementary School on the 1200 block of Meadows Avenue and the Manhattan Beach Preschool on the 1400 block of 15th Street were affected by the lock downs.
Police told the source the lock downs were a precautionary measure. The search ended in one burglary suspect being arrested, however, one got away, according to police.
“We want to keep the suspect from running onto campus, hiding among buildings and creating a hostage situation,” Manhattan Police Officer Stephanie Martin told The Beach Reporter.
The other suspect was seen running between houses in the 1300 block of 18th Street, the source reported.
The Daily Breeze said the suspect caught was a 16-year-old boy. He is suspected of breaking into a Manhattan Beach home and stealing about $5,000 in jewelry. The homeowners told police they found the boy and an accomplice in their backyard around 12:20 p.m. The burglars ran away when they noticed the homeowners, the article stated.
The lockdown at the two schools was lifted around 2:30 p.m. that same day. The search for the other burglar suspect was called off around 3:15 p.m. after police failed to locate him. The Torrance Police Department, as well as officers from the Hermosa Beach, El Segundo, Hawthorne, Redondo BeachandGardena police departments aided in the search, the Daily Breeze reported.
The 16-year-old caught by police was booked into a local jail, Easy Reader News reported. It is believed the suspect is a male.
