In early December, the Manhattan Beach Police Department will hold a seminar at a local school to talk to parents about how they can keep their children safe from online predators and crime.
A police department release stated the December 4 event will take place at Beach Middle School from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Police deputies and other representatives will give an overview of the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force Program (ICAC), which was formed by the U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention in 1998.
The task force program was created to catch child pornographers and sexual predators who turn to the internet to solicit victims through chat rooms, forums or other channels. According to the Manhattan Beach police statement, ICAC's effort led to more than 5,700 arrests and more than 45,000 forensic examinations.
"Parents need to be more aware of how easy the internet makes it for a stranger to contact their children, and they need to know how to talk to their children about this important topic and what to look for to keep their children safe online. I encourage all local parents to join us," the release stated.
The 2012 Los Angeles County bail schedule lists bail of $5,000 for contacting a minor with intent to commit sexual offense, and that California bail bond amount rises to $25,000 for those with a prior record who are jailed on this offense.
