Over the past few months, Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca has been making steps toward improving the county jail and law enforcement system. According to NBC Los Angeles, Baca would like to renovate the entirety of the city's Men's Central Jail and make it an education-based incarceration facility.
By providing educational opportunities to inmates, they are less likely to recommit crimes once they are released from prison, the article stated. Baca said that in his 47 years working with law enforcement, he has been able to determine that most of the inmates that gain interest in bettering themselves while incarcerated end up wanting to continue their education.
It is estimated that the prison renovation project would cost about $1 billion. Baca envisions that once the renovations take place, each of the prison cells will be set up in a modular style, which he believes will be more cost efficient and easier to operate than the current linear cells.
Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore told CBS Los Angeles that although it is an expensive project, it will be worth it in in the long run if it is approved.
"Is it a significant amount of money? Absolutely," he said. "Are people hesitant about it? Absolutely. But there is a component here that the Sheriff is pushing very hard. It is not a place to just warehouse people. He wants to educate them through what is known as education-based incarceration."
Individuals who are arrested for crimes can sometimes avoid jail time if they contact a Los Angeles bail bondsman.
