A Torrance woman who struck a man while allegedly driving drunk is being held at a Los Angeles jail on $100,000 bail, the Daily Breeze reported. The 51-year-old driver, Sherri Lynn Wilkins, reportedly struck 31-year-old Phillip Moreno the night of November 24 and then drove more than two miles in Torrance with Moreno stuck in her windshield before stopping the vehicle. The Torrance Police Department said Wilkins had a blood alcohol level twice the legal limit.
The article stated Wilkins was panicked when she struck Moreno and kept driving. Moreno was alive when he was taken to the hospital, but died shortly after from injuries sustained during the crash. Wilkins was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and drunken driving. Her arraignment was scheduled for November 26.
"He is literally embedded in her hood and into the windshield," Torrance Police Sergeant Robert Watt said, according to the Daily Breeze. "She knew he was somehow embedded into her car but she panicked."
Wilkins told police that she was coming home from work when the accident occurred, and authorities confirmed it appeared she was headed in the direction of her house. She hit Moreno near a railroad crossing, turned right onto a street and according to news reports did not stop until people swarmed her car and told her to stop.
