The Kern County Sheriff's Offic Detentions Bureau has an average daily inmate population of approximately 2,500 inmates. They receive approximately 40,000 new arrests a year.

The Detention Bureau's primary Inmate Reception Center is the Central Receiving Facility located in Bakersfield. In addition the Bureau operates two smaller receiving centers in eastern Kern County and the Lerdo Detention Complex just North of Bakersfield.

The Mojave Substation covers approximately 1320 square miles, which gives it one of the largest response areas of Kern County substations and covers mostly a desert terrain on the western side of a vast desert region, extending into three states called the Mojave Desert.

The substation provides law enforcement services to approximately 14,000 people. It serves the greater Mojave area, and the communities of Cantil, Fremont Valley, Boron, North Edwards, Aerial Acres, Desert Lake, and the Military complex at Edwards Air Force Base.

The Mojave Substation and Jail is used primarily to receive inmates arrested in the Mojave area. There are approximately 14 beds and inmates can stay overnight if not on medications. Inmates will be generally held there pending release or transfer to the main Bakersfield jail.
