Manhattan Beach police host event to educate parents on internet crimes

In early December, the Manhattan Beach Police Department will hold a seminar at a local school to talk to parents about how they can keep their children safe from online predators and crime.

A police department release stated the December 4 event will take place at Beach Middle School from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Police deputies and other representatives will give an overview of the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force Program (ICAC), which was formed by the U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention in 1998.

San Diego jail inmate attacks deputy

A San Diego County Sheriff's Department deputy was recently attacked and injured by a jail inmate. The deputy was processing the inmate at the San Diego Central Jail, who had been arrested for a parole violation, when the inmate attacked the deputy and tried to run away, the North County Times reported.

Two cab drivers in San Diego were reportedly robbed at gunpoint early in the morning of November 26, the North County Times reported. The two robberies happened within minutes of each other - one at approximately 12:58 a.m. and the second at 1:14 a.m. - and descriptions of the robbers provided by the two cab drivers were similar.

The San Diego Police Department arrested a man who allegedly stole a car at gunpoint and then drove the vehicle into a ditch, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

A driver and passenger of a Nissan Altima told police that a man walked up around 7:30 p.m. the night of November 25 and told them to get out of the car, according to the article. A judge ordered four people convicted of insurance tax fraud to stay at an Orange County jail while they await sentencing on the charges. The four, ages 58 to 67, are former employees of Unity Outpatient Surgery Center in Buena Park who failed to report millions of dollars of income and filed false tax returns, Annenberg TV News reported. One of the employees, suspended attorney Roy Chester Dickson, was also accused of creating false documents to hide patients recruited to the hospital illegally, and he reportedly deposited a large amount of money into his personal account.

Drunk driver held at Los Angeles jail for Torrance accident

A Torrance woman who struck a man while allegedly driving drunk is being held at a Los Angeles jail on $100,000 bail, the Daily Breeze reported. The 51-year-old driver, Sherri Lynn Wilkins, reportedly struck 31-year-old Phillip Moreno the night of November 24 and then drove more than two miles in Torrance with Moreno stuck in her windshield before stopping the vehicle. The Torrance Police Department said Wilkins had a blood alcohol level twice the legal limit.

Orange County leader in probation services

To keep jail inmate populations down, Orange County correction officials say they have taken extra measures to ensure those out on probation do not commit crimes and end up back in custody. The Orange County Sheriff's Department stepped up probation services as a result of the prison realignment program in California that went into effect in October 2011 in an effort to decrease prison overcrowding.

Man aims rifle at San Diego police, officer shoots

A four-year veteran of the San Diego Police Department shot a man in North Park the night of November 17 after the man had been firing shots in the street, the North County Times reported.

The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors recently voted unanimously to keep its county manager for the next four years. John Maltbie served as an interim county manager for the past year, coming out of retirement to fill the position.
