Attorney Argues Legality Of Modesto Bail Bond Detention

An attorney for a Modesto bail bonds company has argued that his client was within the bounds of the law when they held previously bailed defendants against their will for hours on end.  The company in question is reported to have detained these people in an effort to get them to make as-agreed payments on their bonds.

Authorities allege that between the years of 2006 and 2009, the company owner and office manager detained, handcuffed and threatened clients at their business office.  The detainees were told they were being held because they failed to comply with the terms and conditions …

Former teacher sentenced to one year in jail

According to a recent report in OC Weekly, ex-teacher Alex Bassinne accepted a plea deal on December 11, pleading guilty to inappropriate behavior with two teenage girls in Santa Ana as well as to the possession of illegal pornographic materials. Bassinne was sentenced to one year in Santa Ana jail, with three years of probation to follow.

Bassinne reportedly accepted the plea deal on December 11 from Orange County Superior Court Judge Craig Robison. He is scheduled to report to Santa Ana jail on January 11 to begin his sentence.

Contractor Booked Into San Mateo County Jail On Six Felonies

An Atherton-based contractor has been arrested and booked into the San Mateo County jail on six felony counts.  The arrest stems from recent work he did for a local resident and the charges include grand theft, diversion of funds, making or passing a fictitious check and one count of obtaining money by false pretenses.

The man in question is reported to be 53 year-old Richard Smith.  A spokesperson for the San Mateo Sheriff's Department said it is believed he intended to defraud the resident out of approximately $400,000.  The defendant's bail was set at $75,000.  It is unclear whether he or …

A 23-year-old woman taken into custody and booked at the Las Colinas Jail faces grand theft charges after being accused of taking a 2-year-old French bulldog named Mozzy from a downtown business.

Dyan Chavez was allegedly caught by video surveillance coaxing Mozzy from a local loan office, Rate Rabbit Home Loans, on Front Street on Monday, December 3. San Diego CBS affiliate KFMB reported that Mozzy was spotted by "good Samaritan" Sandro Fernandez.

Task force aims to keep people out of San Joaquin jail

In an effort to keep jail inmate populations in control and prevent criminals released from prison as a result of the state's realignment program from committing offenses, San Joaquin County created a task force. Fox reported the Community Corrections Partnership Task Force is a joint effort  involving county police departments from Lodi, Stockton, Manteca and Tracy.

The California prison realignment program took effect in October 2011, and shortly after, San Diego County began a program through the Center for Employment Opportunity that is helping former prison and jail inmates find jobs and transition to life post-incarceration. The program marked its one-year anniversary December 5, and celebrated its efforts to keep inmates from crowding the San Diego County Jail, Fox reported.

Men indicted on drug charges, held at Orange County Jail

Three men are being held at Orange County jails on charges relating to an attempt to sell one pound of methamphetamine in numerous local communities, the OC Weekly reported.

Forty-three-year-old Jon Jason Mashburn, 28-year-old Dustin Craig Boston and 38-year-old Lorie Catherine Beck tried selling the narcotic to a person who ended up being a police informer, in August. Mashburn has been arrested six times before on drug-related charges and is being held at the Orange County Jail along with Boston, according to OC Weekly. Beck is being held at the Santa Ana Jail.

Millbrae man booked at San Mateo County jail

A 49-year-old man was recently taken to a San Mateo County jail on suspicion he abused young relatives.

The San Mateo County Sheriff's Department Deputy Rebecca Rosenblatt told the San Mateo County Times that Richard Kenneth Watterworth was arrested at his home late last month after a family member reported the abuse of children, which is alleged to have been going on for a while. The sheriff's department did not specify a duration it was believed the abuse went on, the article stated.

The San Mateo County Sheriff's Department said it will work with local police agencies to combat crime in the area, NBC Bay Area reported. A recent spike in gang activity in county neighborhoods has encouraged law officials to coordinate their crime fighting efforts through the creation of the violence reduction strategy called "Operation SMART," or the Strategic Multi-Agency Response Team.

Sheriff sweep ends with 13 in local jail

Nearly 30 people were arrested in San Diego on a recent November evening after the San Diego Sheriff's Department conducted a "zero tolerance drunk in public sweep," The Coast News reported. A total of 28 individuals were arrested in Encinitas and many were taken to a local San Diego County jail.
