Man Robs Bank For $1 To Get Health Care In Jail

Everyone will agree that health care is expensive- especially for those who don't carry insurance.

But have things gotten so bad that people are willing to be sent to jail in order to see a doctor?

Defendant Tim Alsip says yes.

This Portland, OR defendant decided to have himself rearrested so he could receive free medical care.

Bank employees said the man walked into their storefront last week, walked up to the counter and produced a demand note.  The note indicated that Alsip was "holding them up and that he wanted one dollar".   The teller was a bit confused, but complied.

The man then …

Rustle a Cactus, Meet The Cactus Cops

In your life, you probably never thought you would hear these words together: cactus rustler.

Or another great term: cactus cops.

But in Arizona, the term is actually widely used. It refers to anyone who removes or attempts to remove a protected plant from its natural habitat, specifically the iconic saguaro cactus, without a special permit.

The laws were implemented in order to protect the native species of plants that grow in Arizona, both from people who want to transport the plants for profit and those who just want to maim them for fun.

Many of the plants that are native to Arizona …

At the current time, crime is down, and this is this is the first time in more than a decade that the LAPD is operating without federal oversight.

The shake up entails adding four new members to the committee.

The first of which was one of Mayor Eric Garcetti's most fervent supporters during his campaign.  This man, real estate developer Steve Soboroff, has been named as the first selection.

California Considers Leasing Prison Beds

A representative from Gov. Jerry Brown's office has confirmed the state is considering a plan that involves leasing about 4,600 prison beds.

The US Supreme Court recently upheld a previous decision that requires the state reduce its inmate population by 10,000 detainees by the end of the year.

Counties are trying to figure out how they're going to deal with a flood of parolees and law enforcement agencies have said they're worried about a spike in crime rates.

California is now scrambling to come up with a plan.  And that plan, it seems, involves (more…)

It Is Illegal to Wrestle a Bear

Sometimes you hear about a law and it just makes you ask, “Why does that have to be a law?”

And then you realize it’s because someone out there has done it! And what’s worse, there are still some people who want to do it.
That’s a startling thought when you see that it is illegal to wrestle bears in Illinois as well as other states.
A no-brainer, right? Who in their right mind is going to go up against a massive bear in a one-on-one wrestling match?

Apparently, (more…)

OC Deputy Faces Jail for Pizza Topping

A deputy with the Orange County Sheriff's Department has found himself in hot water after pepper spraying a teenager's pizza.

Pepper spray is bad enough when it gets in a person's eyes, and it apparently wreaks havoc on your insides when ingested.  A total of five people became sick as a result of the deputy's decision.

Authorities said the incident supposedly took place in the fall of 2012.  It was at that time that six-year OCSD veteran Juan Tavera pulled over an unnamed teenager during a routine traffic stop.

At some point in time, for reasons yet to be determined, Tavera decided …
