LA Men’s Central Jail To Be Demolished

The LA County Board of Supervisors has come to an agreement with regard to the demolition of Men's Central Jail.  They have not set a firm timeline that outlines any of the specifics.

One thing is for certain.  More information is needed.  A consultant has been hired to determine whether the current inmate population can be safely reduced.  If there are not any viable alternatives to incarceration a replacement jail will need to be built.

This could cost taxpayers millions. The LA County Sheriff's Department estimates the price tag could span upward of $1.67 billion.  The supervisors said they need to …

Reduced LA Crime Rates Credited To Mayor Villaraigosa

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has announced that the city's violent crime rates have dropped nearly 13 percent during the first six months of 2013.  Statistics show that violent crime rates have fallen by about half since he was sworn into office.

LAPD Chief Charlie Beck has noted this is a vast accomplishment.  He believes this has been made possible due to the mayor's commitment to expand the Los Angeles Police Department.

New Captain For LAPD Northeast Station

A spokesperson for the LAPD Northeast Station has confirmed the patrol unit has a new Captain.   Capt. Jennifer Thomas officially took over the post as of June 16.

Thomas is said to have been with the LAPD for nearly two decades.  She has worked in a myriad of roles throughout her tenure including working with the Asian Crime division and also with gang units.
 
She has replaced Capt. Joseph Hiltner.  Hiltner retired earlier this month.  His retirement reportedly comes approximately nine months after (more…)

Elected Officals Address Mental Health Care In LA County Jails

Elected officials are said to be participating hearings that will help improve access to mental heath care within the LA County jails.  LASD Sheriff Lee Baca was supposed to participate last Friday.

 

It is said that he is working closely with a Senate committee in hopes of reducing very high recidivism rates.  It is believed that as many as 33,000 of the state's inmate population suffers from some form of mental illness.

Baca said the LASD is committed to improving access to mental health services within the LA County jails.

LAPD Allows Bear To Play Through At Los Angeles Golf Course

Golf play at the Knollwood Country Club was suspended for several hours yesterday after a bear wandered onto the course.   The LAPD reportedly invoked a "Bear Paws" rule, which allows human golfers to be removed from the green in order to maintain the peace.   Players said they received notification just before 7 a.m. that a fuzzy creature was seen wandering in the vicinity of hole 11.

Man Booked Into LA County Jail For Stealing Disney Passes

A spokesperson for the Los Angeles jails has confirmed they are detaining a man who is alleged to have stolen passes to Disneyland.  The 51 year-old defendant is said to have posed as a member of the Disney family.

Part Of Men’s Central Jail Could Be Demolished

A representative from the Los Angeles Men's Central Jail has confirmed the county is considering a measure which would allow for a portion of the facility to be demolished.

The LA County board of supervisors has approved a study which would analyze the pros and cons of the demo.  If approved, the torn-down area would be replaced with an area that would house drug-addicted and mentally ill detainees.  Proponents of the plan say the move could save millions of each year.  This is due to a belief that the newer facilities could better rehabilitate offenders.  The expected cost to renovate …

Murder Suspect Wrongly Released From Twin Towers Jail

Members of the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department are asking for the public's help in locating an inmate who was mistakenly released from the Twin Towers Jail.  Authorities say the suspect, Johnny Mata, is the fourth detainee who has been wrongfully released this year.

Defendant Mata was booked into the Twin Towers Jail on charges relating to attempted murder.  He is believed to have gang ties and may be considered dangerous.  Jail officials say missing paperwork and understaffing led to the mistake.   They have also begun using a color coding system on files to indicate which inmates should be classified as …

Two Los Angeles County youths were recently charged with their alleged involvement in a joy ride that turned deadly. According to the radio station KHTS, Thomas Vensko and Colt Doherty, both 20, were charged with second degree murder for allegedly contributing to the death of Dakota Demott. Doherty was allegedly driving his vehicle under the influence of alcohol when he lost control of it, causing it to crash into a large tree. Two Los Angeles County men were recently arrested on suspicion of breaking into a trailer in the Menifee community. According to Patch.com, 37-year-old Christopher Fonseca and 32-year-old Roberto Campos are also suspected of a series of robberies within the community. The duo were apprehended after deputies from the Southwest Sheriff's Station responded to a call on April 27 from the 29400 block of Pyrite Street in an unincorporated community after a resident called in regarding a vehicle burglary. Riverside County sheriff's Sgt.
