California Considers Leasing Prison Beds

A representative from Gov. Jerry Brown's office has confirmed the state is considering a plan that involves leasing about 4,600 prison beds.

The US Supreme Court recently upheld a previous decision that requires the state reduce its inmate population by 10,000 detainees by the end of the year.

Counties are trying to figure out how they're going to deal with a flood of parolees and law enforcement agencies have said they're worried about a spike in crime rates.

Missing Toddler’s Father Released From Santa Rita Jail

A man who had been detained at the Santa Rita Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail has been released from custody.

Authorities said the decision came after the Alameda County District Attorney's Office decided against filing formal charges.  The now former defendant, Anthony Webb, was arrested after his 21-month old daughter, Daphne, went missing from inside of his vehicle.

Webb has acknowledged that leaving the little girl in the car was a bad decision.   The child was reported missing toward the middle of last week.  Police arrested him approximately 24-hours.

Oakland PD Creates Regional System To Reduce Crime

The interim Police Chief for the Oakland Police Department is confident that their new district system will help reduce crime.   City crime rates have spiked in recent years.   Burglaries and thefts are among the incidents that have been on the rise.

Chief Sean Whent said the Oakland PD is focused on identifying areas that are relative hotspots for criminal activity.  Once these areas are identified, officers will be better able to address them.

Oakland PD Gets Complete Overhaul

A spokesperson for the Oakland Police Department has said that efforts to overhaul the department are now complete.

Officers will now be assigned to work within one of five districts.  As of last weekend, at least three of them are up and running.   Consultants felt that dividing the city into districts, each being led by a captain, would help with crime fighting efforts.  Increased crime rates have been a big problem for the city within the past several years.

Santa Rita Jail May Still Receive Monterey County Inmates

A proposal that would allow upward of 60 inmates to be transferred from Monterey County to the Santa Rita Jail is still being considered. The matter is scheduled to be discussed by the county board of supervisors later this week.   Monterey County detention officers say they are hopeful the measure will pass.  It will help alleviate some of the overcrowding within their facilities.

A spokesperson for the jail said they have a rated capacity of 824.  As of February 1, they are holding more than 1,150 inmates.  The county's public defender office has since filed a lawsuit.  They have alleged …

Santa Rita Jail Will Receive Monterey County Realignment Inmates

A spokesperson for the Santa Rita Jail has confirmed that they will soon begin to house inmates from Monterey County.

The motion was approved by the Monterey County board of supervisors.  The $2.5 million contract will allow up to 80 detainees to be transferred to the Dublin facility.  The agreement is scheduled to expire in June of next year.  The ACLU has said they are angered that community meetings were not held prior to this decision being made.

The supervisors said the contract will be funded through state realignment money.   California legislators have granted large sums of money to county jails …

Berkeley PD Arrest 3 Suspects Via Fingerprints

The Berkeley Police Department has announced they were able to capture and arrest three Sacramento residents who are believed to have run over a man after a botched robbery attempt.  The incident is said to have taken place in Dec. 2012.

Oakland Shooting Suspect Arrested By Novato PD

A spokesperson for the Novato Police Department said they have captured a man who is believed to have shot and killed an Oakland teen.

Defendant Larry Williams was arrested and booked into the Glenn Dyer Jail earlier this week.  It is believed he one of several individuals responsible for the murder of Kenneth Jones.  Jones was killed in the West Oakland neighborhood in August 2011.  Police say the victim was shot to death outside a convenience store on August 27.   The suspects immediately fled the scene of the crime and were not in the area at the time officers responded …

Livermore PD Chief To Retire This Spring

A spokesperson for the Livermore Police Department has confirmed that Chief Steve Sweeney will be retiring this March.  Sweeney has been with the department since 1984.  He was promoted to the position of Chief in 2007.

Mayor John Marchand said the police department's history of excellence can be directly attributed to Sweeney's leadership.  Many say they feel privileged to have worked with a man who served the community with such high caliber.

Sweeny joined the force as a patrol officer but was quickly promoted to serve on the department's SWAT team.  He later became a detective, sergeant and lieutenant. Sweeny also served …
