Livermore PD Chief To Retire This Spring

A spokesperson for the Livermore Police Department has confirmed that Chief Steve Sweeney will be retiring this March.  Sweeney has been with the department since 1984.  He was promoted to the position of Chief in 2007.

Mayor John Marchand said the police department's history of excellence can be directly attributed to Sweeney's leadership.  Many say they feel privileged to have worked with a man who served the community with such high caliber.

Sweeny joined the force as a patrol officer but was quickly promoted to serve on the department's SWAT team.  He later became a detective, sergeant and lieutenant. Sweeny also served …

Three robbed at ATMs

The San Diego Sheriff's Department is investigating three different robberies they believe were committed by the same individual between January 16 and January 21 in the neighborhoods of Santee and El Cajon.

Officials say an armed suspect approached a customer at a Mission Federal Credit Union ATM just before 11:00 p.m. January 16 and demanded the victim to withdraw the maximum amount of money possible, NBC reported. The suspect then grabbed the money from the victim before driving off.

Authorities identify man who was recently stabbed to death.

Police have identified the man who was recently found stabbed to death in a Santa Ana parking lot at the Hickory Plaza, according to the Orange County Register. The Santa Ana Police Department responded to calls of a man covered in blood, and found the victim later identified as 38-year-old Jaime Mejia Zaragoza.

The Register reported that Zaragoza died from several stab wounds to his upper body. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities believe Zaragoza, whom they determined as “on and off homeless,” frequented the plaza. Investigators also believe that there were other individuals with Zaragoza in the parking lot in the time leading up to the …

San Diego County continues to adjust to prison realignment

The prison realignment program in California has helped state prisons reduce their inmate populations, but have increased the number of inmates packed inside local county facilities. The San Diego County jails have seen average daily inmate populations increase from 4,632 in 2011 to 5,073 in 2012, the San Diego Union Tribune reported. Much of the increase has been a result of realignment, which transfers nonviolent criminals from state facilities to county lockups and diverts others to early release and probation.

County considers funding jail project with sales tax revenue

The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors is considering allocating revenue generated from an increased sales tax to the new jail project in Redwood City, the Palo Alto Daily News reported.

The sales tax in all of the county's cities will increase half a cent starting April 1, 2013, the source reported. In Half Moon Bay and Hillside, the sale tax will increase even more. The tax is expected to generate $60 million annually.

Inmate injured in Orange County jail

An inmate at the Theo Lacy Jail in Orange County was seriously injured in a recent attack inside the facility. The Orange County Register reported the inmate, a 28-year-old man, had a large cut across his throat after the attack in a medium-security module of the jail while inmates were eating dinner.

The injury was serious, but not life-threatening, Jim Amormino, spokesperson for the Orange County Sheriff's Department told the source. He was taken to Western Medical Center - Santa Ana.

The Manhattan Beach Police Department put two local schools on lockdown January 18 as officers searched for burglary suspects in the area, ABC reported. Meadows Elementary School on the 1200 block of Meadows Avenue and the Manhattan Beach Preschool on the 1400 block of 15th Street were affected by the lock downs.

Contra Costa Jails Get $20M To Fund Prisoner Realignment

A spokesperson for the Contra Costa jails said they are pleased the county board of supervisors voted to approve a nearly $21 million program which would help offset additional jail expenses brought on by the state's prisoner realignment program.

The program first went into effect in Oct. 2011 and allowed for non-serious, non-sexual non-violent prisoners to be transferred from state facilities to county jails to serve out the remainder of their sentences.

County jails have since felt a budgetary pinch since housing these inmates has become their responsibility.

The funds released by the board of supervisors will reportedly be directed toward covering operational costs.  …
