A representative from the LAPD Pacific Division has confirmed they have announced an event for National Night Out.
The event will wake place on August 6 at the Mar Vista Recreation Center between the hours of 6pm and 9pm. National Night Out first started in 1984. The effort was founded to help promote police-community partnerships, involvement in crime prevention activities and to help with neighborhood camaraderie.
It also sends a strong message to criminals that neighborhoods are fighting back when it comes to unlawful activity.
National Night Out has grown exponentially in the past 19 years It currently involves communities from all 50 states, worldwide military bases, US territories and cities in Canada. More than 37 million people participated in 2012. That number is expected to grow this year.
What began as a lights-on campaign that consisted of front-porch vigils has since expanded to include block parties, parades, cookouts, safety demonstrations and seminars, rallies and marches, visits from emergency personnel and other related events. All of this is done to help grow awareness and to strengthen community relationships.
A spokesperson for the event has said that while this singular night is not a be-all-end-all answer to drugs, crime and violence, it represents a determination to make neighborhoods safer. It celebrates crime prevention and safety and underscores a commitment to fight unlawful activity during the remaining 364 days of the year.
The LAPD Pacific Division has reportedly said their night out will include a community member / police officer softball game. Attendees will receive a small key chain LED flashlight.
