A man accused of arson in a Southern California community is expected to be charged for his alleged crimes. According to Patch.com, 35-year-old Javier Adolfo Viera is currently being held at the Pasadena Jail on a $2 million Los Angeles County bail bond. The average bail is set for $50,000, however, due to the nature of Viera's alleged crimes, South Pasadena Police Detective Bill Earley said Viera set dozens of fires throughout the area with the intention of killing or injuring residents. However, Earley told CBS Los Angeles that Viera was "adamant" about the fact that he was not trying to injure anyone when he allegedly started the fires.
Police were able to apprehend Viera on April 21 after he was caught on surveillance footage setting a car on fire in the 6100 block of North Oak Hill in Los Angeles. According to CBS Los Angeles, investigators worked in partnership with South Pasadena Fire and the West San Gabriel Valley Anti-Crime Task force to identify who was responsible for the fires. Although several other suspects were identified by surveillance camera footage, Viera is suspected to be responsible for the majority of the arson incidents.
Viera admitted to crimes, police found evidence that backed up his claims
Another car in the community was torched the day prior to his arrest, and investigators contend Viera was also responsible for those fires. In addition, he is suspected of setting 21 fires in South Pasadena, four in Pasadena and one in Los Angeles. Upon his arrest, the father of three told investigators that he suffers from anger issues that stem from childhood trauma. He allegedly has admitted to causing the blazes, and authorities were able to find corroborating evidence that led them to believe he was responsible for the arson, according to NBC Los Angeles.
"During the investigation, we located several of the incendiary devices that didn't ignite," Earley said. "One of those were able to get fingerprints off of."
According to ABC affiliate KABC, officials said that most of the fires started as small vegetation fires and later escalated to car fires and eventually the exterior door of a local establishment.
