Forty-four-year-old Miguel Nevarez Jr. was recently released from jail on a $100,000 LA bail bond. According to CBS LA, Nevarez was driving a 2002 black GMC pick-up truck when he hit 51-year-old Maitee Estrada at 10 a.m. on April 9 at the intersection of East Fineview Street and North Durfee Avenue and drove away immediately after without reporting the incident. Estrada's daughter Illiana Torres told the source her mother, one of the community's crossing guards, was tossed about 70 feet from where she was standing after being hit by the car.

"Cops were telling me that she's lucky to be alive [be]cause it was really bad," Torres said.

Estrada was able to push a young boy out of the way of Nevarez's vehicle before she was hit. Estrada was listed as in critical condition in the intensive care unit at County-USC Medical Center, and is listed as in critical but stable condition. Investigators were able to track down Nevarez after a witness came forward and provided them with information regarding the incident. Nevarez was arrested on charges of felony hit-and-run as well as driving under the influence of a controlled substance, according to the source.

He was released from jail after posting his $100,000 Los Angeles County bail.

Robbery heist suspects arrested, held on bail
Five men were recently arrested for allegedly robbing a number of Los Angeles-based financial institutions since August 2011. According to Reuters, Los Angeles Sheriff Lee Baca told reporters the suspects were involved in a burglary crew that is unlike something he's ever experienced during his time with the department.

"This is something out of a movie script," he said. "We're talking about a rooftop serial heist crew. We're talking about a lot of money, about $6 million total."

The suspects are Alceu Andreis, 44; Lucian Isaia, 32; Dean Muniz, 45; Laurentiu Penescu, 38; and Daniel Soto, 36, and are each being held on bail ranging from $500,000 to more than $3 million, according to the source. Four of the men were charged with two counts of vandalism, two counts of conspiracy, two counts of burglary and one count of grand theft. Soto was charged with conspiracy, burglary and vandalism.

The men are suspected of purchasing high-end items such as classic cars, seven Ducati motorcycles and a 24-foot power boat with the stolen money. These items were seized from the suspects' homes following their arrests. Jane Robison, spokeswoman for the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office, told the source that an arraignment date for the men was set for April 23.
