A spokesperson for the Santa Cruz County Jail said their lobby has finally reopened. Sheriff's officials said the lobby was first closed about a year ago after a shift in the building's foundation damaged the facilitiy's windows and flooring. Tiles began to buckle and popped out of place, they said and fire crews initially speculated the damage could have been related to a gas or water leak. An evacuation plan was formulated to move inmates, if needed, although jail officials say they were happy it was not necessary.
According to a recent report, lobby services for the past 12 months have been serviced through the adjacent Santa Cruz County Superior Court.
