A spokesperson for the Woodland Police Department said one of its offices sustained non life-threatening injuries when he was attacked during a routine traffic stop. The incident first unfolded last Saturday morning when an unnamed officer took note of a cyclist riding on a sidewalk. That cyclist, he said, was non-compliant in that it did not have an operative light installed.
The individual was stopped and it was soon determined he was on probation and because of that, was subject to search. The officer said he believed defendant Reggie Dickerson was holding contraband in in his t-shirt. At the time he tried to remove that item Dickerson spun around and all but knocked the officer to the ground. A struggle then ensued and the officer was repeatedly elbowed to the face and chest. Both men eventually wound up in the roadway and in danger of being struck by oncoming traffic.
It was at that point that Dickerson reportedly removed a glass smoking pipe from his shirt and tossed it onto the concrete. Additional officers had arrived on the scene at this point and were able to subdue the defendant through the use of a service canine. The defendant was taken to a local hospital to be treated for his injuries and was later booked into the Yolo County Jail. His bail information was not immediately available but it is believed he was being held in lieu of $20,000 bond.
Police say it was learned that Dickerson had been detained at the Sacramento County Main Jail but has been released early due to jail overcrowding.
