LA Jails To Finally Become ADA Compliant

Disabled and wheelchair-bound inmates at the LA County Jails have will get a bit of relief.

Elected officials said they will be moving forward with plans to redesign the county lock-ups to ensure the facilities are ADA compliant.  This, according to sources, ends a six-year long legal battle.

Inmates have long complained that bathrooms were not wheelchair accessible and because of that, some people were soiling themselves. Others were falling out of their chairs altogether because they do not have wall-bars to grab onto.

Getting in and out of shower facilities posed a whole other list of dangerous situations.

Attorneys alleged some wheelchair …

ICE Deal To Be Extended In LA County Jails

Earlier this week, the LA County Board of Supervisors voted 3-0 to extend a controversial partnership that allows immigration officials to target non-legal status inmates who have been convicted of serious crimes, and determine whether they can be deported once their sentences are up.

The remaining two supes abstained.

Immigration activists have already started to speak out against the decision, saying it only serves to drive a further wedge between residents and law enforcement officials within the city's immigrant communities.

The program itself is simple-  immigration officials placed within county lockups, such as the Twin Towers Jail, and their job is to …

Are LA Jails Violating International Laws?

African Americans make up less than 10 percent of Los Angeles County's total jail population, but account for more than 40 percent of those who have been classified as having a serious mental illness.

Students and faculty at the UCLA School of Law have prepared an eight-page report that alleges the LA County Jails are incarcerating racial minorities who are mentally ill inmates at unsettling rates.

The authors of the report feel that these inmate populations would be better served by other types of community-based programs and that jailing these men and women is not appropriate.

According to the report, black inmates …

LA County Jail Opponents Say Adding Beds Won’t Help Mentally Ill Inmates

Although the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors is considering a plan to expand the county's jail system, some have called the idea of adding more beds misguided at best.

A growing portion of the inmate population is mentally ill, they said, and the greater focus should be on treatment, not detention.

Sure, spending the money would allow more people to be locked up, but the ACLU says it will do nothing in terms of enhancing public safety.
The last fix didn't work
Approximately two decades ago, when the Twin Towers Correctional Facility was still in its conceptual phase, construction proponents said a …

Part Of Men’s Central Jail Could Be Demolished

A representative from the Los Angeles Men's Central Jail has confirmed the county is considering a measure which would allow for a portion of the facility to be demolished.

The LA County board of supervisors has approved a study which would analyze the pros and cons of the demo.  If approved, the torn-down area would be replaced with an area that would house drug-addicted and mentally ill detainees.  Proponents of the plan say the move could save millions of each year.  This is due to a belief that the newer facilities could better rehabilitate offenders.  The expected cost to renovate …

Murder Suspect Wrongly Released From Twin Towers Jail

Members of the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department are asking for the public's help in locating an inmate who was mistakenly released from the Twin Towers Jail.  Authorities say the suspect, Johnny Mata, is the fourth detainee who has been wrongfully released this year.

Defendant Mata was booked into the Twin Towers Jail on charges relating to attempted murder.  He is believed to have gang ties and may be considered dangerous.  Jail officials say missing paperwork and understaffing led to the mistake.   They have also begun using a color coding system on files to indicate which inmates should be classified as …

Debate About Race-Based Lockdowns At LA Jails Is Ongoing

A California law that allows corrections officers to lockdown inmates at the Los Angeles jails based on race is coming under fire.  A spokesperson for the jails said they are overcrowded and that racial tensions run high.  When big fights break out between large groups of inmates of different ethnic backgrounds, all detainees of an ethnicity can be locked down.  This, they say, is done in order to enhance safety.

Several weeks ago, a brawl between more than 60 black and African American inmates broke out at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility.  Four were hospitalized. The jail said that this …

CA Prisoner Realignment Increases Jail Populations

California lawmakers have touted the success of the state's prisoner realignment program, saying that one year later they have successfully reduced the number of inmates being detained in state prisons. The program has worked so well, they said, that the Department of Corrections has said numbers are at their lowest point in 17 years.

Implemented as AB109, the mandate was simple. Non serious non violent and non sexual offenders were to be transferred to county jails to serve out the remainder of their sentences.  This would ensure that the state prison system was only housing individuals who committed the most …

Pretrial Los Angeles Inmates May Be Relesaed Early

A spokesperson for the said they are continuing to feel the pinch brought on by a federal mandate that required California reduce its prisoner population.  In order to comply, Gov. Jerry Brown ordered certain lower level inmates be transferred to county jails to serve out the remainder of their sentences.  Those facilities, including the Twin Towers Jail in LA, are now at near capacity themselves.

Sheriffs' officials from throughout the state have begun to explore ways to "relieve pressure".  In Los Angeles, a plan which would allow additional pretrial inmates to be released is currently being explored.   As of late …
