Reduced LA Crime Rates Credited To Mayor Villaraigosa

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has announced that the city's violent crime rates have dropped nearly 13 percent during the first six months of 2013.  Statistics show that violent crime rates have fallen by about half since he was sworn into office.

LAPD Chief Charlie Beck has noted this is a vast accomplishment.  He believes this has been made possible due to the mayor's commitment to expand the Los Angeles Police Department.
Beck understands that commitment was not always easy to uphold, especially during (more…)

Holy Smokes Batman: Spidey And Captain America Are In A Brawl

Costumed superheroes can often been seen walking along Hollywood Blvd.  This is not a hobby for the masked crime fighters.  It is instead a way for them to gain income.  Tourists can tip the spandex-clad men and women in order to cozy up along side them for various photo opportunities.

As you can imagine, times are tough for superheroes.  The economy has taken a toll on them, as well.

The competition along Hollywood Blvd. has become fierce.  Earlier last week, one Spider Man and two Captain Americas got into an all out brawl in some sort of turf war.

The not-so-super-friends started …

LAPD Allows Bear To Play Through At Los Angeles Golf Course

Golf play at the Knollwood Country Club was suspended for several hours yesterday after a bear wandered onto the course.   The LAPD reportedly invoked a "Bear Paws" rule, which allows human golfers to be removed from the green in order to maintain the peace.   Players said they received notification just before 7 a.m. that a fuzzy creature was seen wandering in the vicinity of hole 11.

Knollwood employees took to the course in a golf court in order to wrangle those who had not gotten the message.  One player said that from afar, it looked like a large dog.  Upon …

Oversight Of LAPD Comes To An End

A judge has ruled that the federal government's ten-plus years of overseeing operations at the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) can come to an end.  The oversight was implemented in 2001 after a major scandal erupted.  The incident involved widespread corruption and a handful of abusive officers.

The city's mayor said he is thrilled that a department that was once a national example of how not to do things has become a strong, proud law enforcement agency.   A representative from the LAPD Protective League echoed the sentiment.  They are looking forward to shifting focus to how to increase their efficiencies …

LAPD Says Community Members Play Key Role In Safety

In the wake of this week's bombings at the Boston Marathon, the LAPD has said that public reporting is important in keeping communities safe.

The department cannot be everywhere at once, they said, and that cell phone photos, videos, and citizen tips are of great help when it comes to catching criminals.   The LAPD has indicated they will be stepping up security at upcoming events.  Bomb sniffing dogs will be employed and a greater than usual number of officers will be assigned to patrol duties. The counter terrorism unit is also working proactively to ensure that event goers are safe.

Chief …

Inside the New LAPD Metro Center Jail

New $74-Million LAPD Jail Remains Locked
The LAPD began construction of the new 172,000 square-foot Metropolitan Detention Center four years ago with $70-million in public funds. However, today it's still not being used.

The Los Angeles Police Department is still using the run-down and overpopulated Parker Center jail located in downtown LA. Due to the lack of funds, they are unable to hire jailers to run this five-floor structure, which is one of the largest structures of its kind.

The new Metropolitan Detention Center is equipped with surveillance equipment, automatic doors, and electronic fingerprinting stations. In order to provide greater monitoring of …

City Fiscal Crisis Holds Up Much Needed Los Angeles Metro Jail

Although the very much needed, new Los Angeles Police Department Jail in downtown Los Angeles was supposed to be opening soon, progress may be halted by staffing and fiscal shortages.

The new jail was originally slated to open in March of 2008; however, there have been several construction delays. Now scheduled to open by February 1st, 2010, the new Metro Center Jail would need at least double the amount of officers of what’s currently needed at the existing Parker Center Jail in Los Angeles.

On any given shift at the new Metro facility, at least 62 detention officers would be required …
