The main jail in Santa Barbara has been dealing with inmate overcrowding. Each day, there are almost 1,000 inmates being housed there.
A report says that the plan to move forward with a new North County Jail in Santa Barbara County has been approved by the Board of Supervisors.
The North County Jail will allow 400 inmates to be transferred out of main jail facility.
Plans for the new jail will place it on the corner of Black and Betteravia Roads in Santa Maria. It will also be designed to blend in with the Mission-style buildings that will surround it instead of a less-appealing concrete box.
New jobs will also be a result of constructing the new jail. There will be positions for 124 people, including 75 custody officers. Recruitment will begin in August 2015.
The estimated yearly cost to operate the facility is $21.1 million.
Funds for the jail will be coming from the 2012 AB 900 grant, which gives Santa Barbara County $80 million. The county must match 10% of those funds with money from its own pocket.
