The Harbor Area PD is under the jurisdiction of South Bureau of the LAPD. It serves the Harbor Area including a population of approximately 171,000, encompassing approximately 27 square miles.
This is the largest area in the South Bureau and is home to four distinct communities: San Pedro, Wilmington, Harbor City and the Harbor Gateway.
NEW STATION AND JAIL IN SAN PEDRO
In April 2009 the LAPD opened a new 50,000-square foot Harbor Division Police Station and jail, located at John S. Gibson Boulevard which is at the site of the old Harbor Division headquarters.
The new Harbor Division station located at Fifth and Centre streets in San Pedro replaced a facility that was built about 45 years ago. For several years, Police officers have been operating out of the group of trailers in Wilmington.
Some of the many features of this new modern facility are a helipad, a 400-space parking structure, and a 16,000-square-foot jail which can hold up to 300 prisoners. If someone has been arrested in the Harbor Division jurisdiction, they will be transported to the new Harbor Area Jail location.
