The Los Angeles Port Police are one of the few police agencies in the United States which are dedicated exclusively to 24-hour port activities. They are responsible for the patrol and surveillance of the Port of Los Angeles along with the neighboring Harbor Area communities.
The Mission of the Los Angeles Port Police is to protect the Port of Los Angeles (POLA) against all hazards through identification and elimination. To ensure free flow and protection of commerce, and to identify, apprehend and prosecute persons who would direct criminal activity toward Harbor Department properties, customers or Port users.
They do this by being able to detect and prevent an event that would threaten the security of the Port. They also work to controll access to facilities and identify anomalies which could indicate potential incursions into secure areas from the shore or water.
The port police officers' range of duties include the safety and security of all passenger, cargo and vessel operations. Officers patrol the waterfront by boat, helicopter, automobile and bicycle. They also monitor vessel berthing's to ensure safe docking; issue hazardous cargo and dangerous-goods permits while inspecting vessels to guard against drug smuggling and pollution violations. They enforce local, state and federal laws while providing special training and general assistance to customer security operations.
Boat patrols include the enforcement of laws regulating vessel traffic, pollution investigations, handling of navigational hazards, inspections of docks, wharves, marinas, and all Port-controlled waterways.
