Los Angeles residents Dominique Lewis, 24, and Thurman Sutton, 28, were arrested the morning of April 7 for their suspected involvement with a string of burglaries spanning three weeks. Around 4:20 a.m. on, a concerned citizen called the Ventura County Sheriff's Department when a car with its headlights off pulled into the Latino Market on Thousand Oaks Blvd. in Thousand Oaks, California, KABC TV in Los Angeles reported. At least two masked men with hooded sweatshirts then entered the store, and removed property from within.
When a deputy spotted a car matching the suspected vehicle in the area, they made an attempt to pull it over. The vehicle immediately sped away, crashed into a fence in a nearby residential area, and the two men fled on foot. During an inspection of the abandoned vehicle, deputies found a safe along with a large amount of cash. Deputies, K-9 units, and a helicopter searched the residential neighborhood south of Janss Road for several hours, and finally were able to apprehend the suspects. Lewis and Sutton were taken to jail where they are being held on $80,000 and $60,000 bail respectively, and are each charged with four counts of commercial burglary, conspiracy, hit-and-run, felony evading, and resisting arrest, the source reported. The source did not report if the two had posted a bail bond to get out of jail.
Police believe the two men are connected with a Los Angeles criminal street gang whose members are thought to be responsible for a string of burglaries in the the Thousand Oaks area that began on March 16. Targets mostly included restaurants, but at least one gas station was robbed as well. $30,000 in loses have been reported, generally from safes and cash registers. Authorities are still on the lookout for any leads in the case, including any associates of Lewis and Sutton who may have participated in the crimes.
