Police were called to a fast food restaurant the morning of April 13 in Escondido, California after a man reportedly fell asleep in his truck in the drive-thru lane of a Burger King on West Mission Avenue, blocking restaurant traffic, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.
When the police arrived, the man, identified as as 22-year-old Carlos Santiago was fast asleep in the drivers seat with the engine running and all of the doors locked. According to authorities, the officers were able to get one of the doors open, and in doing so, awoke Santiago, according to Fox San Diego.
Though Santiago was cooperative at first, officers allege that he appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. When the officers asked him to step out of the vehicle for a field sobriety test, he also gave a fake name and did not have any identification. After failing the sobriety test, Santiago was informed that he was going to be placed under arrest, at which point he attempted to flee the scene. According to the Union-Tribune, he ignored the officers' calls to stop, and was subsequently tackled by two officers and a sergeant as he ran away.
Santiago did not go down quietly - he struggled and tried to hit the officers until they handcuffed him, but was still not subdued until additional officers arrived on the scene.
The sergeant, the two officers originally involved and Santiago all sustained minor cuts and scrapes during the incident. Santiago was treated at a hospital before being booked into the Vista Detention Center. None of the officers required medical attention.
Authorities say that Santiago was booked into jail for suspicion of resisting arrest with threats to officers, drunken driving and providing a false name to officers. Additionally, the federal government placed an immigration hold on Santiago, pending possible court action on immigration charges.
