The Santa Barbara Sheriff Department services the community and enforces the laws by providing custody and court services. The Santa Barbara Sheriff's Department is constantly striving to improve its public protection and community services for the citizens of Santa Barbara County. They continue to serve in efforts to meet current law enforcement needs, and plan for the challenges ahead.

In addition to the Sheriff's Department, and its contracted cities of Goleta, Carpinteria, Buellton and Solvang; County Dispatch also serves the Guadalupe Police Department. In addition to the County Fire Department, dispatch also serves the Carpinteria-Summerland and Guadalupe Fire Districts. Emergency Medical Services responsibilities extend to all of Santa Barbara County, including all the cities, except Vandenberg AFB and the University of California campus.

If someone you know has been arrested in the Santa Barbara area, they will likely be transported to the Santa Barbara County Main Jail. This is a secure correctional facility which holds pre-trial detainees as well as male and female sentenced inmates.

The Main Jail receives new bookings directly from Sheriff's Patrol and other agencies such as the Santa Barbara Police Department, the University Of California Police Department, and the California Highway Patrol. Detainees from the Santa Maria Branch Jail are routinely transported to and housed in the Main Jail.
