JAIL INFORMATION
The Sacramento Main Jail is run by the County Sheriff’s Department. It is divided into two east-west divisions, with three sets of pods per side that house the prisoners. Each pod has two levels and a day room which inmates are allowed to use in shifts. This jail houses also every type of inmate, from maximum to minimum security risks, male and female.
Some individuals are already serving sentences while others are merely detained here until their court dates. For those arrestees who qualify, bail may be posted at the SMJ twenty four hours a day.
The Sacramento Main Jail also has a separate Correctional Health Division that takes care of the health needs, both mentally and physically, of every incarcerated adult that passes through their doors. Dental and ancillary services (like therapy and eye care) are also included.
Many of the inmates are employed by the jail, which offers a special prison industries work program. The program provides skill training for inmates for various types of jobs and simultaneously employs them to produce a wide variety of products for government agencies and non-profit groups.
When arrestees are taken to the SMJ they are interviewed, and if inebriated, given a breath, urine, or chemical blood test. After booking, they undergo what is known as the intake process.
This procedure takes from four to six hours and it is comprised of a medical screening and a classification interview in which their custody level is determined. The jail staff considers the inmate’s level of violence, criminal history, previous escapes, and any institutional behavior problems.
In a sophisticated process, inmates of similar custody levels then housed together to minimize the any conflict between them. The bail bond industry is becoming more sophisticated every day, too.
