Drug lord’s daughter pleads not guilty to immigration charges

The daughter of a wanted Mexican drug lord pleaded not guilty to an immigration charge after being arrested in early October and taken to a San Diego jail.

Alejandrina Gisselle Guzman Salazar, who U.S. officials say is the daughter of Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, head of Mexico's Sinaloa cartel, was charged with document fraud, making false statements to federal authorities and for identity theft. She was caught allegedly trying to enter the country at San Diego's San Ysidro port of entry, The Associated Press reported. She handed over a Mexican passport and U.S. visa that belonged to someone else.

San Diego man held in custody

A San Diego man appeared in federal court October 25 for an arraignment on child pornography charges, but is also being tied to a bomb plot in New York City. Howard Willie Carter II previously pleaded not guilty to the three pornography charges, NY1 News reported.

Federal authorities believe Carter - who is being held in a San Diego jail - aided in the plot to bomb the Federal Reserve building in Lower Manhattan, the news source said, after they discovered he had been communicating with Quazi Nafis, who has been charged in the bomb plot.

Sailor pleads not guilty to firearm charges, held on $100,000 bail

The Navy officer who pointed an assault rifle at San Diego police officers during an hour-long standoff at a local apartment building October 14 has pleaded not guilty to his charges, the San Diego Union-Times reported. He is being held on a $100,000 bail.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Esteban Nandin was wandering around the apartment building wearing a tactical vest, gas mask and carrying a military-style rifle when the San Diego Police Department arrived on scene. Nandin was shot by a police officer after he pointed his rifle at him, the U-T reported.

Cash smugglers taken to Vista jail

California border patrol agents recently seized illegal drugs and more than $17,000 in cash in three separate incidents recently.

The cash was found in the vehicle of a U.S. citizen who had been driving with a Mexican citizen on I-15 south of Rainbow, California, according to a Border Patrol release. The border patrol K-9 team conducted a search of the 2009 Ford Econoline vehicle, uncovering $17,863 in cash that had been hidden in packages of baby wipes, shop towels and gloves. Numerous county jails around California have reportedly felt a need to expand or hire additional guards and correctional officers as a result of the state realignment program that has transferred many non-violent criminals to the local lockups.

Third-strike inmates more likely to be addicted to drugs and alcohol

Drug and alcohol addiction is a problem for California jail and prison inmates, especially those incarcerated under the state's three strikes law, a California Watch report found.

While these habitual criminals are no more prone to high-risk "criminal thinking" than other inmates, they are far more likely to suffer from addiction, according to the report based on data from the California prisons department and analyzed with the help of the San Francisco  Chronicle.

With population up at San Diego jails, crime is too

One year after the prison realignment plan took effect in California, diverting inmates from state-run facilities to local lockups, counties are reporting jails are not only overpopulated but also more dangerous.

According to a North County Times article, the realignment program has created fuller jails, which some say has contributed to the higher rate of crime now seen at the jails.

An August report by the San Diego Association of Governments stated crime rates rose during the first half of 2012, marking the first increase in years, according to the North County Times.
