Community members learn how to respond to shootings

In response to the recent shootings across the country, several communities in California are offering "active shooter" training for business owners and operators. The training will help prepare people how to deal and respond when a shooting occurs. The Santa Ana Police Department is among those offering the free training sessions, according to the Orange County Register.

Police catch suspected robbers in Orange County

A man suspected of stealing a 78-year-old woman's purse January 4 has been arrested by police and booked into the Santa Ana jail.

The Orange County Register reported Santa Ana police suspect 34-year-old Michael Travis Hunt was the man who ripped the purse from the woman's shoulder while she was walking on Harbor Boulevard near West First Street shortly before noon.

Jail escapee recaptured, to be held at higher-security jail

A 35-year-old man who recently escaped from an Orange County jail has been found and arrested. The Orange County Register reported Marvin Manzo was being held at the medium-security jail James A. Musick Facility since early November for a probation violation. He escaped in late December, but was captured within less than a week.

A convict escaped from a minimum-security jail December 20, and Orange County police are requesting the public's help in finding the escapee. According to CBS LA, authorities continued their search on December 21 for 35-year-old escaped convict Marvin Manzo. Manzo was discovered to be missing from the low-security James A. Musick Jail during a body count around 9 p.m. on Thursday, leading authorities to immediately perform a thorough search of the area.

Fashion Island shooter denied bail

The alleged Fashion Island shopping center shooter, 42-year-old Marcos Sarinana Gurrola, was ordered to be held in Orange County Jail without bail, according to OC Weekly.

Gurrola was taken into custody on December 15 after allegedly firing more than 50 shots outside a Newport Beach mall. The man reportedly fired into the air and at the ground, with some witnesses saying he never pointed the weapon at any individual. While the shopping center was placed on lockdown, no one was killed or injured in this incident.

Former teacher sentenced to one year in jail

According to a recent report in OC Weekly, ex-teacher Alex Bassinne accepted a plea deal on December 11, pleading guilty to inappropriate behavior with two teenage girls in Santa Ana as well as to the possession of illegal pornographic materials. Bassinne was sentenced to one year in Santa Ana jail, with three years of probation to follow.

Bassinne reportedly accepted the plea deal on December 11 from Orange County Superior Court Judge Craig Robison. He is scheduled to report to Santa Ana jail on January 11 to begin his sentence.

Men indicted on drug charges, held at Orange County Jail

Three men are being held at Orange County jails on charges relating to an attempt to sell one pound of methamphetamine in numerous local communities, the OC Weekly reported.

Forty-three-year-old Jon Jason Mashburn, 28-year-old Dustin Craig Boston and 38-year-old Lorie Catherine Beck tried selling the narcotic to a person who ended up being a police informer, in August. Mashburn has been arrested six times before on drug-related charges and is being held at the Orange County Jail along with Boston, according to OC Weekly. Beck is being held at the Santa Ana Jail.

A judge ordered four people convicted of insurance tax fraud to stay at an Orange County jail while they await sentencing on the charges. The four, ages 58 to 67, are former employees of Unity Outpatient Surgery Center in Buena Park who failed to report millions of dollars of income and filed false tax returns, Annenberg TV News reported. One of the employees, suspended attorney Roy Chester Dickson, was also accused of creating false documents to hide patients recruited to the hospital illegally, and he reportedly deposited a large amount of money into his personal account.

To keep jail inmate populations down, Orange County correction officials say they have taken extra measures to ensure those out on probation do not commit crimes and end up back in custody. The Orange County Sheriff's Department stepped up probation services as a result of the prison realignment program in California that went into effect in October 2011 in an effort to decrease prison overcrowding.
