Manhattan Beach police search for burglar suspects, place schools on lockdown

The Manhattan Beach Police Department put two local schools on lockdown January 18 as officers searched for burglary suspects in the area, ABC reported. Meadows Elementary School on the 1200 block of Meadows Avenue and the Manhattan Beach Preschool on the 1400 block of 15th Street were affected by the lock downs.

Police told the source the lock downs were a precautionary measure. The search ended in one burglary suspect being arrested, however, one got away, according to police.

LAPD Parker Center Closes For Good

A spokesperson for the LAPD said that the department's former headquarters at Parker Center has closed for good.

Elected officials and top ranking members of the department gathered outside of the building on Tuesday afternoon.   Several hundred other LAPD employees joined them in watching Chief Charlie Beck symbolically chain and padlock the doors.   Parker Center had been the home of police operations from 1955 until 2009.  The once headquarters had been named after chief William Parker, who had transformed the LAPD from a corrupt institution to a finely-tuned machine.

Manhattan Beach police host event to educate parents on internet crimes

In early December, the Manhattan Beach Police Department will hold a seminar at a local school to talk to parents about how they can keep their children safe from online predators and crime.

A police department release stated the December 4 event will take place at Beach Middle School from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Police deputies and other representatives will give an overview of the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force Program (ICAC), which was formed by the U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention in 1998.

Drunk driver held at Los Angeles jail for Torrance accident

A Torrance woman who struck a man while allegedly driving drunk is being held at a Los Angeles jail on $100,000 bail, the Daily Breeze reported. The 51-year-old driver, Sherri Lynn Wilkins, reportedly struck 31-year-old Phillip Moreno the night of November 24 and then drove more than two miles in Torrance with Moreno stuck in her windshield before stopping the vehicle. The Torrance Police Department said Wilkins had a blood alcohol level twice the legal limit.

More police in Torrance means less crime, study finds

A recent study from the University of California at Berkeley found that communities with a high per capita ratio of police are able to better combat crime and save money.

"Our estimates imply that each dollar spent on police is associated with approximately $1.60 in reduced victimization costs, suggesting that U.S. cities employ too few police," the study states.

The researchers identified the U.S. cities with the most police, many of which are located in southern California. The Torrance Police Department is among the those in the state with the most police officers per capita, according to the study. Burbank and …

Los Angeles County Supervisors Support Jail Reforms

County supervisors for Los Angeles County are prepared to take action to eliminate inmate abuse inside local jails following a report on deputy brutality. The supervisors will also take responsibility for making sure that Sheriff Lee Baca follows through with the reforms.

A special committee conducted a nine-month investigation on allegations that sheriff’s deputies inside the county jails were using excessive force on inmates. It also determined that Sheriff Baca ignored many warnings about the abuse and misconduct of the Department.

The committee proposed 63 recommendations to the Board of Supervisors for Los Angeles County. They include restructuring the disciplinary guidelines …
