Santa Rita Jail May Still Receive Monterey County Inmates

A proposal that would allow upward of 60 inmates to be transferred from Monterey County to the Santa Rita Jail is still being considered. The matter is scheduled to be discussed by the county board of supervisors later this week.   Monterey County detention officers say they are hopeful the measure will pass.  It will help alleviate some of the overcrowding within their facilities.

A spokesperson for the jail said they have a rated capacity of 824.  As of February 1, they are holding more than 1,150 inmates.  The county's public defender office has since filed a lawsuit.  They have alleged …

Are Michael Jackson And Elvis Presley Deaths Related?

The Michael Jackson wrongful death trial has brought up a number of questions.  The current focus seems to have shifted to the late artist's concert promoter, AEG Live Co-CEO Paul Gongaware.  Gongaware was also the promoter for Elvis' last concert tour.  Both artists died before they were able to complete their scheduled performances.

The CEO testified last week that Elvis died due to complications from a drug overdose.  His attorney also questioned him about the matter, at which point the story changed.  During the second round of questions Gongaware said the artist passed away due to heart problems.  Presley was …

OCSD Sheriff Says Jails Are Underfunded After Realignment

The realignment first took effect in October 2011.  Under that program, which is also known as AB 109, certain state prisoners started being transferred to county jails in order to serve out the remainder of their sentences.  The state promised it would provide additional funding to the OCSD in order to offset additional costs. Hutchens said more than 30,000 detainees have been shifted to county jails since AB 109 was implemented.

State officials disagree.  They have said that the reduction in the number of state prisoners is not due to them being shifted out.  Many of those numbers are due …

Inmates Tattoo ‘Katie’s Revenge’ On Forehead Of Convicted Child Molester

Yes, this is true... and here's the story:  A man who was sentenced to life in prison after molesting and murdering a 10 year-old girl has a new tattoo. Shortly after Wabash Valley State Prison inmates learned about the details of Anthony Stockelman's crimes, they decided to administer their own form of jailhouse justice. Several unnamed detainees ambushed Stockelman and held him to the ground. During this time another prisoner forcibly administered a tattoo on the man's forehead. That tattoo reads "Katie's Revenge". Katie is the name of the child that was kidnapped, molested and drowned just 15 miles …

More Beds Needed At San Joaquin County Jail

A spokesperson for the San Joaquin County Jail has confirmed that a Grand Jury has issued a report which says the county should add bed space to the county's detention center.  They have also suggested a beefing up of law enforcement services and justice staffing.   The report was released approximately one week ago.

It was found that the county is doing what they can in order to protect the public, but additional steps need to be taken.  They have acknowledged that budget cuts and lack of funding has been a key issue.  The report was not meant to criticize, they …

Contra Costa Sheriffs Considered For Patrols In Hercules

A representative from the Contra Costa Sheriff's Department has confirmed they are being considered as a provider of Hercules police department services.  A city representative said a tax measure is on the June 4 ballot.  If the tax increase is not approved they will likely need to disband their full time department and hire a contract law enforcement provider.  Elected officials said that if this happens. residents should expect to see little or no change to the type of service they are receiving now.

Contra Costa sheriff's deputies have said that if the community looks at this from a practical …

Jails Still Feeling Realignment Crunch

The California inmate realignment has been in effect for approximately 18 months.  Since that time more and more inmates are being transferred from state prisons to county jails.  This has caused overcrowded conditions on a local level and many detainees are being released via GPS monitoring devices in order to save bed space.

Jails throughout the state have been trying to adapt to the influx of inmates.  At least three counties are facing lawsuits because detainees say that access to medical care is not up to par. They have also alleged these jails lack the necessary substance abuse programs and …

San Joaquin County Jail Expansion Still Being Considered

The county board of supervisors said that while they are still considering a measure which would allow for expansion of the San Joaquin County Jail a final decision has not yet been made.  The vote, they said, is expected to come in about two weeks.   The county was awarded $80 million in jail construction funds in 2008.   The plans to expand the jail, however, were on the table long before those monies were available.

The biggest concern is not construction costs, but the annual expense of running a larger facility.  It is estimated that operations costs could top $70 …

Part Of Men’s Central Jail Could Be Demolished

A representative from the Los Angeles Men's Central Jail has confirmed the county is considering a measure which would allow for a portion of the facility to be demolished.

The LA County board of supervisors has approved a study which would analyze the pros and cons of the demo.  If approved, the torn-down area would be replaced with an area that would house drug-addicted and mentally ill detainees.  Proponents of the plan say the move could save millions of each year.  This is due to a belief that the newer facilities could better rehabilitate offenders.  The expected cost to renovate …
