Woman kept on bail at Las Colinas Detention Facility, preliminary hearing held

A Riverside woman who was held at the Las Colinas Detention Facility on $2.1 million bail since her arrest last summer was due in court for a preliminary hearing February 21. The woman, Elizabeth Masters, faces several felony charges, including embezzlement by an employee, grand theft, theft by false pretenses, forger and willfully filing a false tax return, CBS affiliate KFMB reported.

According to KFMB, Masters was fired from her employer in December 2011 after they discovered she forged more than 700 company payroll checks and deposited them into her personal bank account. She allegedly embezzled nearly $6 million in the nine …

Gang detective pleads not guilty to misdemeanor charges

A San Diego Police Department detective recently pleaded not guilty to drinking and driving charges. According to CBS affiliate KFMB, 34-year-old Jeffrey David Blackford was allegedly off duty and driving his undercover police car when he crashed the vehicle into a roadside utility box in Allied Gardens on December 7. Blackford needed to be treated at a local hospital for injuries he sustained during the crash.

According to The Associated Press, Blackford was charged with two misdemeanor counts of driving under the influence with a special allegation of reckless speeding. He is scheduled to appear in court on March 27 and currently faces between four days and six months in jail along …

San Diego Police Department involved in recent car chases

Officers from the San Diego Police Department arrested a 17-year-old girl after a police chase on February 18. According to ABC news affiliate 10 News, police tried to pull over the teenager after she was caught speeding in her Honda Civic.

Police noticed the girl in the driver's seat as well as two male passengers when the chase began. Speeds reached around 55 miles per hour and covered a distance along Route 94 and southeast to the National City border, reports said.

Contra Costa Jails Discuss Spending Realignment Funds

A spokesperson for the Contra Costa County Jail has said they are considering a measure which would allocate $4 million of their now $19 million annual prisoner realignment funding toward programs aimed at reducing recidivism rates.

The County Board of Supervisors has opened up a request for proposals (RFP).  The deadline to apply for a piece of the $4 million is fast approaching. They are hopeful to begin allocating the awards by June 1.  More than 400 former state inmates have been shifted to the county jail since the realignment took effect.  In addition to causing inmate overcrowding, it is also forcing …

Members of the San Francisco Police Department may soon be permitted to carry stun guns.

Chief Greg Surh believes that if the policy is implemented, officers would be able to engage in an alternate use of force in situations where perpetrators pose an imminent threat to their safety. Two car chases in the San Diego area struck the community. According to CBS affiliate KFMB, San Diego Police Department officers arrested John Cummings at his mother's home after he led the officers on a police chase in a stolen vehicle February 17.

Car thief victim Aaron Liu told the source he was confused when he first noticed his vehicle was missing from San Diego State on February 15.

"My car was just gone," he said. "I made sure I didn't have a memory lapse and looked up and down the parking structure. And couldn't find it."

San Diego Sheriff’s Department investigates robberies

The San Diego Sheriff's Department is investigating a series of robberies involving convenience stores in the El Cajon and Lakeside neighborhoods. According to ABC affiliate 10 News, the robberies occurred during a span of two hours at four different 7-Eleven convenience stores in the early morning hours of February 18. Reports said the suspect was armed and video footage revealed he was wearing a "Sith" mask from the "Star Wars" movies.

Along with the mask, the suspect was also wearing a black jacket or sweatshirt with a hood. According to CBS affiliate KFMB, the man was carrying a small semi-automatic handgun.

After leading police on a chase, a woman and her male accomplice were arrested by local police. The female, 24-year-old Adriana Martinez, was taken to Las Colinas Detention Facility in Santee. According to CBS affiliate KFMB, Martinez led police on a pursuit at around 5:45 p.m. on February 18.

Martinez and a male passenger were signaled to stop after a patrol officer ran the license plate of the Honda and it came back as a stolen vehicle. The director, Dr. Robert Morris of Center for Crime and Justice Studies, and a criminologist with UT Dallas, created a research paper that states bail bond companies that are privately owned could have an advantage when getting defendants to show up for all their scheduled court dates.

Son of San Diego Police Department captain pleads guilty to charges

A San Diego Police Department captain's son pleaded guilty to charges of assault and battery. The incident leading up to the charges occurred in August 2012 near a Pacific Beach taco shop. According to NBC San Diego, Alex Guaderrama allegedly assaulted two women and punched another in the face. He also reportedly broke a car window causing more than $400 of damage before leaving the scene the night of the incident.
