A spokesperson for the Santa Barbara County Jail has confirmed they booked nearly 100 people into the system last weekend after a weekend college party got out of hand.

Although police aren't sure what prompted the display of violence, what they do know is that by the end of it, many people were throwing rocks and beer bottles at one another.

The annual spring break party, otherwise known as Deltopia, was attended by about 15,000 people, according to a spokesperson for the sheriff's department.

But it wasn't until a campus police officer got smacked in the face by a backpack containing several bottles of booze, that things began to escalate.

Party morphs into an all-out riot

Witnesses reportedly say that's when people started lighting fires, vandalizing police cars and throwing various objects.

Officers said that while they've seen the occasional problem at the annual party, it's been years since they've encountered a situation like what broke out over the weekend.

It got so bad, they said, they needed to start using tear gas and pepper spray to subdue the offenders.

Five sheriff's deputies and one university police officer were injured during the event.  At least one man will need surgery to fix damage that was done to his hand.

Although the situation fully stabilized by the following morning, deputies credit that as being a result of bringing in support from other nearby law enforcement agencies.
