    FRESNO COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT

    The Fresno County Sheriff's Department operates four jail facilities, housing over 2,150 inmates. There is a total of 387 officer’s who work within these facilities, covering three different shifts. At each shift, there are about 80 officers overseeing the vast inmate population.

    Built in 1993, this facility is five stories with four floors. It holds a maximum of 1,728 inmates. This is the newest jail facility, built with the same security concepts as the Main Jail but with the latest technology.

    The oldest jail facility, built in 1947, has four floors. The maximum number of inmates held at this jail is 675. This is the toughest of all the jails, with perimeters and 1/4" case hardened steel used to retain inmates.

    Satellite Jail

    This facility was built in 1986 and is made up of four modular units. The maximum population here is 200. The security here is the lowest of the Detention Bureau. Inmates here are sentenced to county time and are assigned to participate in various work crews, cleaning roadways, gardening, etc.

    INMATE PROGRAMS

    The Detention Programs at Fresno Jails are created to enable inmates to become safe, self-sufficient, and healthy law-abiding citizens. The officers are committed to developing an inmate's character. The Josephson Institute of Ethics has set the "Six Pillars of Character" in order to outline the central values which form the foundation of behavioral expectations of inmates. These are:

    Inmates at the Fresno County Jail are offered the chance to further their education through the Delma Graves Adult School, run by the Fresno County Office of Education. Programs offered include Literacy, Adult Basic Education/ General Education Development, English as a Second Language and Personal Skills Development. Life Skills courses include Cognitive Thinking, Work Attitude and Behavior, Relationships, Seeking Employment, Money Management, and Interpersonal Skills.

    Inmates are also offered Religious and Chaplain Services, Library, Alcoholics/ Narcotics Anonymous meetings, Community Resources, Health/ Wellness/ Recreation, Child Support Responsibility Information, and Marriages. These are all available to sentenced and pre-sentenced inmates.

    Medical, dental, and mental health services are available to inmate’s 24-hours a day.

    This facility was opened in 1989. This is a 12-story facility with six floors. Both medium and maximum security inmates are housed here. The maximum population at this jail is 1,064. A system of security perimeters make it difficult to escape.
