ARREST AND BOOKING PROCESS

Since there is not a jail at the Cal State Fresno University Police Department, when someone is arrested on or around the campus of Cal State Fresno, they will be taken to the Fresno County jail for booking and processing.

The booking process may include, obtaining the inmate’s personal information, photograph, (sometimes referred to as a mug shot), fingerprints and a background check of their records for warrants, etc. The Fresno County Jail is administrated by the Fresno County Sheriff’s Department.

Once the booking process is complete, the detainee will be allowed to make telephone calls in accordance with California Penal Code Section 851.1. Inmates booked into the Fresno County jail are eligible to be released on bail or bond, unless specified by a warrant, court order or bail schedule.

When the bond is posted, release from jail can take anywhere from 2 to 6 hours depending upon various factors specific to the defendant, or how busy the facility is.

The Fresno University Police Department is operational 24 hours a day, year round, to provide assistance and to serve the campus community.

Per statute, Education Code Section 89560, the department’s primary jurisdiction is university property and one mile beyond the campus property.

The University Police Department Communications Center is staffed with trained emergency dispatchers, 24 hours, 7 days a week. The success of the University Police Department is attributed to the protocols of Community Oriented Policing and Problem Solving (COPPS).

This collaboration of community partnerships provides for a safe and secure campus.

The University Police Department is actively involved in the education, enforcement, and prevention of Driving Under the Influence (DUI).

Reporting crime is essential to enabling the police department to assess criminal activity and develop strategies and solutions to provide a safe and secure campus.
