    VENTURA POLICE DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

San Buenaventura, better known as the City of Ventura, is the county seat of Ventura County, California. It became a city in 1866 and today is populated by about 106,750 residents. The place was actually established in 1782 with the construction of the Mission of San Buenaventura by Father Junípero Serra.

The serves their city well. They were recently granted five million dollars to support such innovative programs as their School Resource Officer program, Drug Suppression, curbing Gang Violence etc.

The Ventura Police Department is open 24/7 but the Front Lobby, Desk Officers and Traffic Services have specific hours: Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (closed Fridays and Holidays).

The Department has 178 employees. 131 of them are sworn personnel and about 60% of them work in the Patrol Unit. The officers follow a program called Community Problem Oriented Policing, where they are encouraged to fully investigate crimes, work with the public and look for long-term solutions to stopping crime.

The Ventura Police Department is divided into seven Divisions (Administrative Services, Communications/Technical Services, Investigations, Traffic/Special Operations, and Daytime, Weeknight and Weekend Patrol Commanders). Each Division falls within the Services or Operations aspect of the Department.

The Operations Division covers law enforcement units like the Patrol, K9s, SWAT, Training, Traffic, the Special Enforcement Team, and Youth Services. These Units are the responsibility of two Watch Commanders.

This police station does have on-site cells, but they are only used for temporarily holding arrestees. The Ventura police do not book them into the system at this station. Instead, they transfer both men and women whom they have arrested to the Ventura County Jail, where bail may be posted 24/7.
