Ventura County police departments contract with the county Sheriff’s Department for all of their jail services. When someone is arrested in this area, they may be taken to a police station for initial booking, but more often then not they are transported directly to a Ventura County Jail. There, they will be fingerprinted, photographed and classified for inmate housing, based on the nature of the crime, any previous infractions and behavior.
If the person has been “classified” (also called: “processed in”) at a police station, they usually end up going to the Main Ventura County Jail or the Santa Maria Jail if they are not bailed out quickly.
The Ventura Sheriffs Department Branch Jail Honor Farm, located in the Ojai Valley, used to house female inmates, but it has since been shut down due to budget cuts.
In Ventura County, it takes around 6-12 hours to get an arrestee into the computer system. Once bail has been posted, it can take anywhere from 3-10 hours before detainees are released, depending on how busy the jails are.
The Ventura County Main Jail holds pre-trial detainees, and both male and female, sentenced inmates. It receives new bookings directly from the Sheriff's Department as well as other south coast police agencies.
All female and male inmates and those who require 24-hour medical care end up here. This jail is staffed by 231 safety and general personnel and it houses around 900 inmates at any given time. Bail can also be posted at the VCMJ 24/7.
