Cathedral City, which became incorporated 1981, is a business and resort community located 110 miles east of Los Angeles and 115 miles northeast of San Diego. This city boasts year-round sunshine and warm desert temperatures. About 50,600 people live here and it is one of the fastest growing regions in the nation.
The Cathedral City Police Department is growing with it. This department serves its citizens with a diverse set of divisions and makes it a point to work in partnership with their community.
The CCPD has an on site jail for defendants who have committed misdemeanors only. Those charged with felonies are transported to the Palm Springs or Riverside Jails. Bail can be posted at the CCPD or at the jails.
The Cathedral City Police Department patrols approximately 35 square miles. Their Uniform Patrol is made of 34 sworn officers. In 2001, they logged more than 33,487 calls for service with an average response time of just over five minutes for priority one type calls. They are able to do this because each of their police cars contains a computer that officers use to find addresses, create reports, generate maps, and receive calls.
The Cathedral City Police Department has a joint SWAT Team with the Palm Springs Police Department. The team saves lives by resolving difficult police situations through the use of developed skills, tactics and specialized equipment/capabilities. Each SWAT officer takes on a variety of responsibilities within the team and membership is voluntary.
The CCPD also has a K-9 Unit with nine German Shepherds. Both K-9 officers and their partners are trained at the "Falco K-9 Academy" which imports the dogs from Europe. The K-9s can locate, chase and capture a suspect much more quickly than a human being and by doing so; they reduce the amount of injuries received by human officers.
Given the desert area's vast ATVing, the Cathedral City PD also has an Off Road Enforcement Program, which is made up of two ATVs, related safety equipment, a storage trailer and a Four Wheel Drive truck that tows it all. Twelve volunteer officers patrol Cathedral City’s desert area to provide a safe, enjoyable recreation outlet while protecting the environment. The team shows people where they can ride in the 640 acres of public land set aside for this purpose.
The CCPD has a Detective Bureau handles an array of assignments along with report transcription, case preparation, evidence processing and storage, crime analysis and criminal investigations. Crimes are divided among categories such as Family Crimes, Business Crimes and Street Crimes. In addition, Detectives are assigned to Multi-Agency Task Forces like the Narcotics Task Force, the Gang Task Force and the Auto-Theft Task Force. There is also a Crime Analysis Unit that focuses on crimes against persons and property.
Last but not least, is the Special Enforcement Detail (SED), which takes care of gang suppression, graffiti, vehicle theft and burglary, fugitive apprehension and more. The SED conducts surveillance and undercover operations, too.
