    MONROE DETENTION CENTER

The main jail for Yolo County is the Monroe Detention Center which is located in the city of Woodland near the intersection of Gibson Rd. and Pole Line Rd. The general public is allowed to call the jail staff and are generally limited to the following information: expected release time (if known), bail amount, charges by Penal Code, specific housing location, court arraignment date / location, visitation regulations and booking number.

Those wishing to visit an inmate at Monroe Detention Center should be prepared for standing in line and long delays. General population visitation is scheduled for Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Visitors must have photo ID and be 18 years of age. Visitors under the age of 18 need to be directly related (son or daughter) to the defendant and must be accompanied by an adult. Modest dress is mandatory. Regulations are subject to change and we recommend that you call.

Throughout the years, concerns have been raised at the proximity of the Yolo County jail in relation to the Woodland Community College and residential areas. Similar concerns have been raised by the Universisty of California, Davis campus. Over the past 5 years, three inmates have escaped which legitimizes these concerns. At this time, there are no plans to relocate the jail.

The other primary jail facility for Yolo County is the Walter J. Leinberger Memorial Minimum Security Detention Facility which is utilized primarily for sentenced individuals or potential overflow from the Monroe Detention Facility.

When one is arrested, there are many considerations regarding legal representation. Most choose either a public defender or a private attorney. Most public defenders don't have the resources to put up a robust defense. On the other hand, private attorneys may provide a stronger defense but will likely cost a lot more money. In less serious cases, defendants will often chose to represent themselves.
