The officers of the San Jose University Police Department work hard to provide a safe and secure learning environment with professional, progressive and superior police, emergency, transportation and educational services in partnership with the campus community. Those arrested by the SJSU Police will likely be taken to the Santa Clara County Jail.

The University is made up of a community of more than 33,000 students, faculty and staff. The Police Department is divided into four divisions: Administrative, Field Operations, Special Services, and Support Services. Every year, nearly 60,000 incidents are documented and 800 suspects are arrested. Dispatch sends officers out on more than 50,000 service calls annually.

    Field Operations

Field Operations is made up of two units: Patrol and Police Service Assistants. The division is responsible for the Critical Response Unit, Evening Guide Escort Program, Field Training, Cadet Program, Special Even coordination, and Terrorism response.

The patrol unit patrols campus 24-hours a day, on foot, bicycle and vehicle to help deter crime and be available to the community at all times. The Police Service Assistants (PSA) supplements the patrol units with students. PSAs participate in the Evening Guide Escort Program, escorting campus members up to two blocks off campus. They also act as backup dispatchers, unlock facilities that need to be made available, and perform special duties for University Housing and college of Engineering.

    Evening Guide Escort Program

If a student, staff or faculty member feels unsafe walking on campus, UPD will provide an escort to any campus location and up to two blocks off of campus. This service is available 24-hours a day, 7-days a week.

Escorts are typically trained uniformed students with a police radio and will walk you to your destination. If a student is unavailable, an officer will provide the escort. Requests for an escort can be made from any Bluelight phone or by calling 408-924-2222.

    Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) Training

RAD is a system of training that teaches women realistic self-defense tactics and techniques. It begins with teaching awareness, prevention, risk reduction and risk avoidance and then progresses into basic, hands-on defense training. The course is taught by nationally certified RAD instructors.  Classes are held at least once each semester. The 12-hour course is divided into four 3-hour sessions.
