    The Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office has 5 different units which provide a majority of services handled by the Bureau. These include, Employee Development, Inspections and Control, Personnel and Finance, Planning and Research and Professional Standards.

    When someone has been arrested by the Contra Costa Sheriff's Department, they will likely be transported to the Martinez Detention Facility Jail for booking and processing into the system.

    The Martinez Jail houses pretrial and sentenced inmates.

    The Custody Services Bureau or (CSB) of the Department operates four detention facilities including:

    • the Martinez Detention Facility
    • Custody Alternative Facility
    • West County Detention Facility
    • Marsh Creek Detention Facility.

    These facilities average an average inmate population of 1,500. Custody alternative and inmate transportation are also the responsibilities of the Detention Division.

    Deputy Sheriff's also provide security for the Superior Courts and Commissioners. In 1988, the Marshal’s Office was merged with the Office of the Sheriff , which now constitutes the Court Security Division within the Custody Services Bureau (CSB).
