BANNING POLICE DEPARTMENT AND JAIL INFORMATION

When someone has been arrested in Banning, they may be taken temporarily to the Banning Police Station for processing. Shortly thereafter, they will be transferred to the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility, Banning Jail.

The defendant’s arrest and booking process can take anywhere from one to 24 hours depending on the  workload of the jail staff.  The booking process typically consists of fingerprinting, photographs, background checks and entering the inmate into the jail computer system.

After the defendant is booked into the jail system, they may be released from jail on bail bond or they will be held until arraignment if bail is not posted. Arraignment will generally take place within three business days of their arrest. For example, if the defendant is arrested on a Thursday evening, they would generally be arraigned on the following Monday morning.

The Banning Police Department is committed to serving and protecting all citizens of their diverse community. This is done through a partnership focused on public trust and providing a safe environment for all. They offer police assistance 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The Banning Police Department consists of 41 sworn personnel and 20 classified personnel. The Police Department offers a variety of services and assignments such as: Field Patrol, Detective Bureau, Emergency Tactical Unit, Narcotics Task Force, Gang Task Force, Narcotics K-9, Motors, G.R.E.A.T., School Resource Officer, Community Special Enforcement Team, Field Training Officer, and Reserve Police Officer Program.

Since 2005, the Banning Police Department housed the San Gorgonio Special Operations Gang Task Force at an off-site location in the city. The task force is managed by a supervisor from the California Department of Justice, Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement. The team consists of law enforcement personnel from the California Department of Justice - Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement, California Department of Corrections, Riverside County D.A.'s Office, Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, Riverside County Probation Department, Beaumont Police Department, and ultimately, the Banning Police Department.
