    GENERAL INFORMATION

The 77th Street Community Police Station is under the jurisdiction of South Bureau of Los Angeles Police Department. The area serviced by the station currently has a population of approximately 175,000 people and covers approximately 11.9 square miles.

The City of Los Angeles is divided into 18 geographic areas, each with its own Community Police Station. There are over 20 specialized divisions that utilize volunteers from different communities. In its community volunteer program are over 2,000 people who donate more than 10,000 hours of service each month. These volunteers represent a broad range of ages, from teenagers to senior citizens.

The LAPD 77th Street Station is perhaps best known for being at the heart of the Watts riots.

Today, the 77th Division serves community and neighborhoods which include the Crenshaw District (South of 52nd Street), Athens Park, Chesterfield Square, Gramercy Park, Hyde Park, Vermont Knolls, View Heights, Vermont Park and Morningside Park.

If someone you know has been arrested in these areas, they will be transported to the 77th Street Station Regional Jail located on South Broadway in Los Angeles.

Arrestees who are at the 77th Street jail may have one visit a day by a friend or family member during the established visiting hours. However, an attorney, bail bondsman or member of the clergy may generally visit at anytime. Bail can be posted at Los Angeles Police Department Jails 24 hours a day.

Those arrested, not released on bail will be held in jail until arraignment. However, most people who can arrange for bail, do so in order to present the best possible case at arraignment. An defendant's court arraignment location will be determined by two factors: where the person was arrested and the type of charge filed against him/her.
